1. CASE #23: Music and Theology

The latest issue of Case magazine #23 looks at two aspects of the relationship between music and theology. One aspect is the role of music and singing in Christian gatherings. Here our authors—Steve Guthrie, Andy Judd, Peter Dart and Rob Smith—address a range of questions. Why do Christians sing? Is it to express ourselves, or is it a spiritual discipline? Is emotional music to be sought after or avoided in church? What styles of music are appropriate for Christian music? Should we sing psalms? Should we only sing psalms? The other aspect of music and theology explored centres on the work of Jeremy Begbie, who seeks to deepen our understanding of music and life by viewing it through the lens of musical categories. In this issue, he shows us how Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s theology was influenced by musical thinking, and Steven Wright reviews his work on the relationship between music, theology and time.
